We’ve visited this perfect, comfortable, spacious self-catering holiday home near Killarney twice, and will return again in the fall. We love it. It is a traditional period Irish home with many updates, thoughtful details and designs with guest comfort in mind. The trompe l’oeil-style mural of raincoat and walking gear (Wellies and binoculars included!) on the hallway wall as one enters the house is a perfect example of this vacation home’s utter charm.
Sitting Room
The sitting room is situated to the left of the entry hall. It is cozy and comfortable, with red overstuffed sofas and a large leather chair, original wood mantle over the fireplace, and charming antiques displayed throughout. This room has a wonderful Irish atmosphere, peaceful and perfect for relaxing and chatting after a long day of touring.
Dining Room & Kitchen
Across the hall from the sitting room is the dining room, which is adjacent to the newly remodeled kitchen, and filled with instruments and sheet music to double as a music room. With comfortable seating, an upright piano, views into the open kitchen and a cozy slate fireplace, this is a great place for groups to gather and chat while prepping or eating meals together.
The kitchen has been completely remodeled and is terrific. With a traditional Aga stove, belfast sink, and custom farmhouse table, this room offers a taste of the richness of Irish tradition and a sense of domestic life in Ireland through the years, yet has all the modern conveniences, including a large refrigerator, microwave and a dishwasher. The table seats 6 comfortably.
Sun Room/Conservatory and Television Room
Adjacent to the kitchen through a large open doorway is the sun room, also called a conservatory, which is surrounded on three full sides and topped by windows, with views out to the lushly landscaped grounds. Sitting in this many-paned room in a rainstorm was a singular treat on one of our last visits to Ireland.
There is a fireplace, satellite TV with DVD, as well as toys and games for travelers of many ages.
Bedrooms/Bathrooms
Ground Floor: Two good-sized King bedrooms with shared bathroom.
Upstairs: Smaller twin bedroom with adjacent bathroom with shower stall.
Both bedrooms on the ground floor are large and have elegant carved wood sleigh King beds with goose-feather duvets and silk duvet covers. These rooms are comfortable, light-filled and sweetly decorated.
These rooms share a bathroom with tub and shower-over-tub. The washer/dryer is located in a cupboard in this bathroom.
Upstairs is a smaller twin bedroom, with comfortable beds and an adjacent bathroom with shower stall.
The house sits on an acre of well-kept grounds and gardens and is elevated from the street and river below. A concrete patio at the back of the house has wooden furnishings and a gas bar-b-que. It is completely private should you wish to entertain, or in case sunbathing is one of the items on the short list of vacation “to-do”s.
Location
The property lies just on the outskirts of Killorglin, which is close to Killarney, across from the River Laune. The charming village of Killorglin is less than a mile away, and can be walked to and from during the day, however the street is narrow, with a wall on one side and the river on the other, and should really not be traveled on foot at night.
